Dolphin Tale 2 2014 720p BluRay DD5.1 x264

Dolphin Tale 2 2014 720p BluRay DD5.1 x264

I doubt anyone who saw “Dolphin Tale” back in 2011 could’ve imagined such a story was ripe for a sequel. Not only was Winter the dolphin a powerful source of inspiration for visitors to her Florida rehabilitation aquarium, but she proved surprising muscle at the box office, allowing producers an opportunity to continue the drama with “Dolphin Tale 2,” a pleasant follow-up that’s more meaningful than its predecessor, touching on a few choice adolescent dilemmas before it plunges back into Disney Channel-esque habits that are harsh on the senses.

Safe and sound in her Clearwater Marine Aquarium home, Winter the dolphin has experienced a surge in popularity, allowing owner Clay (Harry Connick, Jr.) a chance to expand the facilities, gifting greater educational responsibility to teen daughter Hazel (Cozi Zuehlsdorff) and Winter’s caretaker, Sawyer (Nathan Gamble). When Winter’s aged companion dies, the loss leaves the dolphin depressed, unwilling to wear her prosthetic fin or behave kindly around Sawyer. Threatened with violations that could permanently remove her from the property, Clay isn’t sure about the prospect of another companion, while Hazel and Sawyer frantically search for a way to keep their beloved dolphin where she belongs. Also weighing heavily on the gang is an academic opportunity for Sawyer that would take him to Boston for three months, forcing the teenager to face the possibility of being away from Winter, while Hazel struggles with romantic feelings for her friend.

With Winter now comfortable with her prosthetic fin, thriving in her new surroundings, writer/director Charles Martin Smith (who also appears as a federal inspector) doesn’t have any obvious direction for the sequel to go. Swooping in to provide conflict is death, with Winter’s pal passing away due to old age, leaving the physically challenged dolphin without a companion to grow with, which, according to the movie, is against the law. Instead of a second rehabilitation film, “Dolphin Tale 2” becomes a quest for partnership, with Sawyer and Hazel fighting to bring a recent patient into Winter’s pool, forcing companionship, which Clay is firmly against. Granted, the dramatics aren’t much, but with all the faux fin business locked out of the continuation, “Dolphin Tale 2” gets down to business in a hurry, establishing the expansion of the aquarium, Winter’s continued hero status in the community, and her eventual slide into melancholy, disturbing Sawyer, who’s no longer able to communicate with his pal in an easy, relaxed manner.
While the quest to find a roommate for Winter takes up a considerable portion of “Dolphin Tale 2,” the humans are more prominently featured this time around, handing the majority of the movie to Hazel’s surge of confidence, offered new responsibilities around the facilities, leaving her father amazed and a little frightened of her speeding maturity. Hazel is also highlighted as a young girl with a crush on Sawyer, growing jealous of his newfound fanbase, stewing silently while others approach Winter’s trainer with giddiness. Although Sawyer chews on a subplot featuring his participation in a rare educational opportunity, forcing him to decide if he truly wants to leave Florida and all that he loves behind for three months, “Dolphin Tale 2” is more about Hazel’s desires and debates with Clay. Winter is more of a supporting character this time around. While there’s ample time set aside to see the dolphin at play in her pool, the sequel doesn’t play close attention to Winter, preferring to process the delicate emotions of the juvenile characters, with a few, including first love and separation anxiety, refreshingly universal.
Acting isn’t the draw of “Dolphin Tale 2,” with most of the actors under the mistaken impression they’re performing in a silent movie, wildly overplaying what should be subtle moments. Welcome complexity concerning the aquarium’s position of profit vs. responsibility is disappointingly downplayed, losing a bit of necessary grit. “Dolphin Tale 2” misses a few opportunities to define itself along the way, more content to roll around the mud pits of melodrama as a way to connect with the audience. It’s not ideal, but the sequel supplies a tad more concentration on matters of the heart, while still presiding over enough fantasy dolphin interactions to tickle younger audience members.

Dead Snow Red vs Dead 2014 BluRay 720p DTS x264-CHD

Dead Snow Red vs Dead 2014 BluRay 720p DTS x264-CHD
It’s hard to believe that “Dead Snow” debuted over five years ago, but director Tommy Wirkola had more pressing career matters to tend to instead of mounting a sequel right away. Testing the Hollywood experience with “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters,” Wirkola secured an unlikely hit movie, but also found his creativity zip-tied by industry power plays. To help reclaim some of his old mojo, the helmer has returned to his old Nazi-zombies stomping grounding with “Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead,” a ruthless and hilarious follow-up that feels more like a purging of filmmaking frustration than a straight-up continuation, with its blitzkrieg approach to gore and slapstick easily topping the original effort, while showing off exactly what type of mischief Wirkola can muster.

Surviving the original Nazi zombie attack by returning stolen gold to leader Herzog (Orjan Gamst), Martin (Veger Hoel) is horrified to learn that doctors have mistakenly replaced his severed arm with his undead enemy’s magical limb. Realizing that Herzog and his ghoulish troops are set to topple a quiet Norwegian village, Martin springs into action, teaming up with the Zombie Squad, an online monster-fighting trio from America aching for their first real taste of conflict, with Daniel (Martin Starr), Monica (Jocelyn DeBoer), and Blake (Ingrid Haas) completely unaware of actual danger. Realizing the only way to slaughter the Nazis is to retaliate with an equally large force of zombies, Martin and the Zombie Squad manage to resurrect a Russian military force previously enslaved by Herzog, setting out to restart a war.

While imaginatively manufactured with intense gore zone visits and diverting snow-covered locations, “Dead Snow” felt a little flat, unable to match its lunatic premise with a satisfying jolt. The “Evil Dead”-inspired madness was appreciable but rarely thrilling, finding this directorial impotence seeping into “Hansel and Gretel,” another genre extravaganza with little command of its working parts. “Dead Snow 2” arrives with a clear attitude that nothing is going to stand in its way, finding Wirkola working out his professional issues with this nasty effort, using Herzog’s reign of terror as an excuse to stage incredibly violent conflicts and mishaps, with children, the physically handicapped, and senior citizens not spared when it comes time for the Nazis to begin taking lives, while Martin initially has difficulty understanding his new arm and the power it contains. Wirkola is making a gruesome feature, but not an angry one, making sure a comedic tone is always available to “Dead Snow 2” to help the audience embrace the cartoony carnage, not recoil from it.

If the original effort was a Sam Raimi tribute, “Dead Snow 2” takes its cues from early Peter Jackson movies, developing a bloodbath atmosphere punctuated by silly business involving the geeky passions of the Zombie Squad, who bring their love of “Star Wars” to Norway as they get involved in Martin’s fight. The Nazis have more to work with in the sequel, looting a WWII museum along the way, which gifts them a tank, while Herzog uses his powers of resurrection to recruit more undead along the way, building a true army. Also involved in the conflict are the local police, who haven’t dealt with a murder in decades, suddenly faced with a fantasy war zone the captain compares to video game, soon realizing that the only way to survive the afternoon is to get out of the way. Wirkola shows a righteous command of pace and comic timing, and his love for make-up effects and gore lights up every scene, finding the flinging of intestines once again his weapon of choice when decimating select enemies. The rest are pummeled into red pudding.

“Dead Snow 2” never fatigues or stops the big show, displaying an unexpected confidence from Wirkola, who wisely builds on the previous picture instead of recycling its best parts. Reaching farcical heights at times, the sequel manages its madness quite well, extending to the final scene of the movie, which makes a fantastic joy ride of bloody guts and growling Germans positively irresistible in its barnstorming romanticism. Wirkola the director finally matches Wirkola the film fan here, cooking up a riotous extravaganza that’s incredibly fun to watch unfold. Or perhaps explode is more apt description.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles aren’t strangers to big screen adventuring. Based on a comic that debuted in 1984, the Turtles were the star of their own cinematic franchise in the 1990s, with the original picture presenting quite an achievement in creature fabrication. There was also an underrated CG-animated effort, 2007’s “TMNT,” which failed to catch fire, returning the brand name to television where the premise has found its greatest success. Now co-producer Michael Bay takes a crack at bringing the Turtles back to the multiplex, overseeing a PG-13 production that uses motion capture technology to realize the heroes in a half-shell for a new generation. It’s a major upgrade in technology, viewed throughout the feature in frenetic action sequences, but the screenwriting isn’t up to the challenge, trying to merge classic Turtle interactions with Bay’s customary event movie coldness.

Shredder (Tohoru Masamune) is preparing to take over New York City with his evil minions, the Foot Clan, armed with a special robotic samurai suit that permits him super-strength and blade-based weaponry. Trying to crack the mystery of the Foot Clan is reporter April O’Neil (Megan Fox), a journalist tired of lifestyle assignments. Finding herself in deep with the enemy, April is rescued by mutated turtles Michelangelo (Noel Fisher), Donatello (Jeremy Howard), Raphael (Alan Ritchson), and Leonardo (Johnny Knoxville), and brought to their rat sensei, Splinter (Tony Shalhoub). Realizing that the members of this hero squad are the pets she lost as a child, April is determined to discover exactly what happened to her companions when they were volunteered for a mutagen study, requiring help from billionaire Eric Sacks (William Fichtner), who funded the experiment long ago.

While Bay and his Platinum Dunes team are responsible for the development of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” directorial duties are handed over to Jonathan Liebesman, the uninspired helmer of “Battle Los Angeles,” “Wrath of the Titans,” and a previous Bay production, “Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning.” More of a puppet than a true visionary, Liebesman keeps to the Bay formula, emphasizing noise over mischief, with this latest pass at big screen dominance defined by violence and a dark tone. Perhaps the new “Turtles” is best summarized by Shredder, who is no longer a character on the hunt to rule the world, but a machine that shoots knives and handily smashes anything that challenges it, with the heroes receiving quite a beating when they attempt to take down their enemy. Shredder is a thing, a toy without a personality or goals, keeping “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” devoid of tension as the baddie simply stomps around, while the Foot Clan presence is regulated to stunt sequences where the masked goons are randomly tossed around, never quite feeling like the army we’re told they are.

Liebesman struggles to blend severity with customary Turtle shenanigans, making strained scenes where the ninjas gobble pizza and engage in brotherly banter awkward, clashing uncomfortably with an edgy atmosphere of violence and suffering. The screenplay doesn’t help by adding fart jokes and gifting weird sexual come-ons for Michelangelo (after getting his first glimpse of April, the turtle proclaims that he can feel “his shell tightening”), and the picture doesn’t do well with silliness, which feels like pandering to classic Turtle fans. “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” is more assured in adventure mode, with the production doing away with a second act, merely going from introductions (including a radical reworking of April’s relationship to the teenagers) to an extended climax as the hunt for Shredder and the mystery of the mutagen begins.

There’s one terrific scene featuring the Turtles, April, and lovesick cameraman Vernon (Will Arnett, better screaming than cracking wise) sliding down a snow-covered mountain chased by the Foot Clan. The action is intense, with Bay-esque camera spasms and unbroken swirly shots, but it’s also the one sequence that’s truly about teamwork and camaraderie. There’s not enough of this interplay in the effort, which tends to take on the characters one at a time, trying to solidify personalities for the inevitable sequel.
